As part of Swachhta Pakhwada, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) organized Swachh Bharath Abhiyan awarenesss programmes in ten government schools, in and around Visakhapatnam city from 11 to 15 July 2019, in association with School Radio. These awareness programmes were held exclusively on source segregation of waste generated by students in their class room, school, house and community.
These programmes were held in interactive mode by using participatory methods. Students were asked to explain what they know about Swachh Bharat and it's objectives. In most of the schools, Principals, Head Masters, and inchage-principals and District Coordinator of SC Welfare Residential Schools have participated in the programmes and explained about Swachh Bharath in their inaugural remarks of the programme.
Students were given Waste- Source Segregation cards developed by School Radio. The participants were divided into small groups and they discussed about the types of waste and classification of waste. Later, they were told about life cycle analysis of waste and responsible behaviour in reducing waste, segregating waste at source level, turning awareness into application, action and trasformation of the society, and thereby keeping surroundings clean and green, open defecation free by constructing individual toilets and using public toilets. Participants then discussed about plastic waste and the story of plastic and how to manage it. Children were given a task by School Radio, to calculate the waste they are generating in their school as an individual. Students came out with their approximate waste generation statistics, then they made to discuss how much waste is generated in each household of Visakhapatnam. School Radio resource persons, informed participants about how much waste is getting generated every day in Visakhapatnam City, as per Greater Visakahapatnam Municipal Corpation and AP Pollution Control Board.
School Radio has given them information about the successful case studies in plastic recycling, temple flowers recycling and innovations in coconut peat, shell and banana fibre to take up entreprenuership programmes to become a green job proiveders. School Radio team stressed on resource recovery of waste material and expenses involved in the production of each 'use and throw' product. Also focused on courses offered by Universities to study at Degree, PG Diploma and PG level in different streams in Water, Sanitaion,Waste Management.
Gifts were given to students, who have actively partcipated in the programme.
